Laurento Estate: Wineries in Bologna Italy | Umberto Cesari Winery

Podere
Laurento

A privileged terroir since 1985.

In the hills north of the Via Emilia lie the vineyards of Podere Laurento, where we cultivate not only Sangiovese but Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Chardonnay, and Pinot Grigio as well.

Laurento is a very old agricultural estate that once belonged to the Curia of Bologna; Umberto Cesari purchased it in 1985. Its clay soils and southwest aspect produce extraordinary wines, such as our Laurento Sangiovese Riserva, an all-Sangiovese that ages for 24 months in large capacity casks of to 30 hectolitres.

Podere Laurento’s international varieties are partners is some blends: Moma Rosso is a beguiling cuvée of Sangiovese, Cabernet Sauvignon, and Merlot, while Iove Chardonnay Pinot Grigio is a deliciously crisp pleaser with citrus-edged aromatics backgrounded by luscious tropical impressions.

Grape varieties on this podere
Cabernet Sauvignon
Cabernet Sauvignon, a red grape originally from Bordeaux, is often combined with other red varieties, such as Merlot, to produce wines with significant longevity. Umberto Cesari was among the first to blend it with Sangiovese, and the felicitous result was our Liano.
Chardonnay
Chardonnay, the fruit of a spontaneous cross between Pinot Noir and Gouais Blanc, is the most widely-cultivated white grape in the world. It yields superb wines, even blended with other grape varieties. On the hillslopes of Castel San Pietro Terme, Chardonnay achieves to the fullest its qualities of elegance, structure, and cellarability, as amply demonstrated in our Liano.
Merlot
Merlot, a spontaneous cross of Magdeleine Noire des Charentes and Cabernet Franc, is one of the world’s most prized grapes. All-Merlot wines are known for their silkiness, elegance, and longevity. Whereas in Bordeaux, it is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, we combine it with Sangiovese, and the result is our Yemula.
Pinot grigio
A spontaneous mutation of Pinot Noir, the Pinot Grigio grape appears a pink-coppery hue and can be vinified in many different styles. We prefer the classic white-wine style, with a dash of Chardonnay, which is our Iove Chardonnay Pinot Grigio.
Sangiovese
Sangiovese is the most widely-cultivated grape in Italy, and one of its most favoured habitats is Romagna. Its early presence here is documented by a 1651 document in the State Archives in Faenza, where it is cited as Sanzuvesa. Today, our Resultum represents a Sangiovese di Romagna that is not only deeply traditional but elegant as well.
