Claterna Estate: Vineyard in Bologna Italy | Umberto Cesari Winery

Podere
Claterna

The red earth of Imola.

The hills on which Podere Claterna lies are just outside Castel San Pietro Terme, not far from what was once the historical winery headquarters. These Sangiovese and Merlot vineyards, averaging 15 years old, are east-facing and planted in predominantly reddish marl, known as terre rosse, conditions that give us vigorous, superbly-delicious wines.

This mix of Sangiovese and Merlot yield Yemula, our homage to the city of Imola, a red that is intensely-coloured and aromatic yet firmly-structured and pleasurably tannic on the palate.

Merlot
Merlot, a spontaneous cross of Magdeleine Noire des Charentes and Cabernet Franc, is one of the world’s most prized grapes. All-Merlot wines are known for their silkiness, elegance, and longevity. Whereas in Bordeaux, it is often blended with Cabernet Sauvignon, we combine it with Sangiovese, and the result is our Yemula.
Sangiovese
Sangiovese is the most widely-cultivated grape in Italy, and one of its most favoured habitats is Romagna. Its early presence here is documented by a 1651 document in the State Archives in Faenza, where it is cited as Sanzuvesa. Today, our Resultum represents a Sangiovese di Romagna that is not only deeply traditional but elegant as well.
